APNdroid 2.0 coming

I am happy to announce first development builds of APNdroid 2.0. Thanks to Dmitry Pavlov (widget, russian translation, code improvements), Julien Muniak (Locale plugin), ‘juraad’ (Czech translation) you can download fresh test build of what’s going to be APNdroid 2.0.

So what’s new?

  • We have a home screen widget! I can’t count how many people requested this.
    widget-on widget-off
  • We have Locale plugin. Requested again and again and again…
    locale-plugins locale-settings locale-situation
  • We would like to add support for MMS exclusion (that means new settings)
  • Switching data on/off should be much faster, once we will verify one optimization

Overall, I am really happy that these guys jumped in. I had really a problem to find some time to work on APNdroid, but new commiters are just awsome. Also, application just passed 50.000 downloads and is getting more and more downloads per day. Increase of downloads is accelerated by articles on AndroidGuys and Lifehacker!

So if you are brave enough, go to the apndroid.googlecode.com and grab the .apk file from Downloads section and file any bugs or enhancements. Don’t forget to enable installation from unknown sources in phone settings.

  1. Jon says:

I don’t know how difficult this would be, but could APNdroid be hooked to screen on/off events so that it would only be connected when I have the screen on?

  2. Martin Adamek says:

@Jon Huh, I am not sure, but I think this is the kind of thing that something like Local should solve.

  3. Drew says:

@Jon This is something that is already incorporated in the WiSyncPlus program that you can download on the market. It does cost money but is a really great program overall. I am about to download APNdroid 2.0 as I would love something that would quickly disable/enable APN when I know I wont be using data on my phone even when my screen is turned on.

    Thanks Martin!

  4. Hugo Navia says:

    I’m using the V2 R8 version… But I can’t exclude the MMS… I don’t know if it isn’t implemented yet or if it’s a bug…

Hope to see the MMS always enable option added in a near future…

  5. Hugo Navia says:

PD: I’ve saw the screenshots and the R8 doesn’t show the same info as in those screenshots… So, Are those for a future version of APNDroid???… Oh, and just a bug I’ve might have found, the widget doesn’t show the inside icon correctly (the one that shows APNDroid in black inside the white square).

  6. Martin Adamek says:

@Hugo now there is 2.0-r9 that should handle MMS correctly. It also includes new UI. As for the widget icon – could you please create bug for that at http://apndroid.googlecode.com ? Attached screenshot would be great too.

  7. Hugo Navia says:

I’ve tried to reproduce the bug with no succes… But I think it happened when I installed the 2.0 R8 over the non beta one (1.*) and when I realized that I have to uninstal the previous version, I’ve tried to remove with the same installer…

I mean, I’ve used the option to uninstall the app that appears when you try to install the same app.

Sorry, my english is not very good…

The bug was that when the widget icon was on tdesktop, the black arrows didn’t appear…

I’ve found another possible bug in R9:

If you select the “display state notification” the icon of 3g/edge/gprs show that the connection is activated, but in the desktop, the widget shows inactive (no green bar)… And te connection is really inactive…

Everything else is working greate =D… I can now send MMS without having to activate the internet =D…

    Thanks a lot mate…

PD: As I’ve said before, my english is not very good… I speak spanish so… sorry for any inconvenience…

  8. Pavlov Dmitry says:

@Hudo. Thanks for you bug search! =).
Issue about incorrect button status on the main application screen was created and we will fix it soon.

  9. elMInStER says:

i have a problem, it is don’t work for me, notification icon is “off”, widged is gray, icon of 3g/edge/gprs is showing on taskbar, and internet is working :(

i have original android 1.6 for G1, apndroid 2.0 r12, in accesspoint apn is changed with suffix “apndroid”

  10. Martin says:

    @elMInStER Please file a bug at http://apndroid.googlecode.com

  11. Douglas says:

Does this also shut off HSDPA?

  12. Hugo Navia says:

HSDPA use the same kind of connection (APN) that EDGE or 3g Uses… So the answer is yes… It works…

  13. Douglas says:

    Thanks Hugo!

  14. Arch Stanton says:

Hi everyone. I installed apndroid-2.0-r12 on my Milestone and its working very well. Congratulations! A very clever tool!
However, I now discovered that without internet access the calendar doesn’t work. It won’t even start without being able to log into Google. What the ## …. Fortunately one can use the contacts without internet connection.
Does anyone know of a way to still use the calendar (after it’s been synchronized) without internet-connection?
    Thanks a lot, Arch

  15. Martin Adamek says:

Arch, I am glad to hear that it works on Milestone. I just bought one on eBay few minutes ago. The thing with calendar – I am not sure what can be done with that, but it’s pretty stupid that it requires connection. Just can’t understand that :-(

  16. Arch Stanton says:

Hi Martin, thanks for your reply. I have to withdraw my hasty comment – the calendar requires only a network connection, when one has changed the SIM-card. But contacts work without … hmpf. Anyway, everthing is working now.
My be you can tart up the look of your widget one day. Such a cool tool needs a cooler look ;-) don’t you think so?
    Bye, Arch

  17. Martin Adamek says:

Hey Arch, check apndroid.googlecode.com. APNdroid 2.0 developement build is available there and has also widget support.

  18. albert says:

Hi Martin, my girlfriend recently got a HTC Magic (Android 1.5) and I installed APNdroid from the Android Market. The App works well but there is one weird thing about it: After being off for multiple hours, the 3G/EDGE/GPRS data connection does not come up when turned on again. Even when using an application like the browser or mail in order to `trigger’ the data connection it simply does not come up again. What helped in the end was `flight mode on’, `flight mode off’. But that’s not really how things should work, right?

  19. Sigh says:

I have APNdroid installed on my Verizon Droid Eris (Android 1.5), I uninstalled and cannot connect to the internet anymore. I looked for the APN in my menus but there is no way to edit the APN to fix it. How do I get it working?

  20. Pavlov Dmitry says:

@albert we know about this problem, but now we does not have clear solution of it. So flight mode is the only way to come internet back in such a case.

@Sigh. The best solution install it again, switch to enabled state and uninstall.

  21. Chris says:

Would this work on the HTC Hero on Sprint with CDMA?

  22. Martin Adamek says:

Hey Chris, we are looking at CDMA issues at this group thread: http://groups.google.com/group/apndroid/browse_thread/thread/ef46a4c24e2b7cbe
It is about Droid with CDMA so that probably applies to your Hero too.

  23. Adam says:

Hi Martin! Looks great but… Installed apndroid after reading about it in Lifehacker. I was unwise to not check for confirmation of operation /w Droid. My Verizon Droid can now no longer use 3G! Can’t fix manually! At first, did not work (tried both on and off, not sure which was disabling 3G) at all, so connected /w wifi to make sure I still had access. Removed apndroid while connected via Wifi, now I can’t get 3G no matter what I do. Tried reinstalling apndroid, no difference. Checked access point screens, I don’t see any signs of any renaming. Any suggestions would be most appreciated, not sure what to do.

  24. Martin Adamek says:

Adam, I am sorry to hear that. There are 2 currently known issues:
    1) Droid on CDMA – APNdroid doesn’t work. It changes nothing AFAIK, it’s just not able to turn data connections off
    2) Hidden APNs – in order to make switching states faster, we are ignoring some hidden APNs. It causes problems with some networks where hidden APNs are actually used to connect, but again, should not do any damage, just not able to switch data off. We added extra checkbox to 2.0.1 update to force modification of hidden APNs.

Even before 2.0 few people reported 3G coming back (randomly) and someone suggested that switching phone to Flight mode and back actually fixes the problem. I would suggest you try that and let me know if that worked. Restarting phone might help too in some cases, I guess.

  25. beworker says:

@albert, @Dmitry: If there is no connection after enabling you should use 2G/3G switch. This will trigger re-connect. At least it worked in this way when I had 1.5 firmware.

  26. Martin Adamek says:

Thank you for the tip, beworker!

  27. Chris says:

    hey.. nice blog!

I don’t know if its okay that I post here.. but I’ve a problem.

I’ve a g1 1.6 tmobile (austria) and I use apndroid. but now.. it doesn’t disable the connection.. I can use the WWW when APNDroid is “on” and when its “off”

    Chris

  28. Martin Adamek says:

Chris, do you use version 2.0.1 from Market? If so, do you have 3rd checkbox in APNdroid checked?
